The Sound of Healing

Aug 16, 2025

Ah, don’t we love and appreciate those passive healing modalities! Luxuriating in a tub of hot water, a guided meditation (often called releases and transmissions these days), or another version of a sensory immersion - the sound bath. These pleasures and self-care remedies are ancient! They’ve been practiced in churches, temples, public spaces and private homes for centuries. Often a candle is lit and the bell rings to signify entry in a sacred space, whether in a personal or communal setting.

I call energy modalities that employ one technique non-specific. It is received, whether individually or in a group, and the body in its innate intelligence (mostly below our level of awareness) uses that energy where it’s most needed. All good! It’s effective temporarily, unless done and reinforced on a regular basis. What if you utilized your own, built in “sound bath” - the frequency generator within your own body - for healing?

The first form arising from Oneness was sound. In Christian myth, it was “the Word”; in the Vedas, it was “Aum”. When you vocalize, a sound powered by your breath creates a vibration that moves throughout your body. In most religious traditions there is singing and chanting, usually in groups to multiply the effect. Together, we create a much bigger energy field than one person can on their own!

Generating a sound, you first feel the sensation in your chest; then it travels and expands to reverberate your entire being. It’s an actual, measurable wave. I teach a type of somatic movement that utilizes sound to open up your physiology. Toning a syllable sets up a vibration that initiates physical movement. Our fluid nature is activated, connecting us to cosmic intelligence and our innate spiritual nature. All sound can awaken that potential in us! Even humming affects the vague nerve, relaxing us into our parasympathetic nervous system.

Even in normal speaking, your voice carries a vibration that influences those around you. More than the literal meaning of your speech, the energy of your voice carries emotion which is  clearly felt and communicated. Your words are powerful messages on so many levels. We can  actually “resonate” with another person - a beautiful thing!

Sound travels through space, dissipating to some degree but because energy is never destroyed, Its subtle vibration is endless; even chanting a mantra softly sends a healing note out into the universe. It becomes more powerful when repeated; a classic Hindu and Buddhist mantras is 108 times. Reciting mantras and prayers are vocal and mental meditations.

Use this self-generated healing mode often for yourself. Do it regularly to promote your physical health, facilitate spiritual growth and increase your range of frequency. Of “sound body and mind” is another way of saying - you’re healthy!

Peace, love and healing -
